Creation Imports vs. Update Imports
Genius CE and Enterprise bulk imports can serve two functions: Creation and Updates.
Creation CSVs: The initial import of new information that the system will create upon import for the first time.
Update CSVs: The import of updated data that the system will use to make updates to preexisting data already created.
To update any data, ensure that the object's related cell in its respective "key" column is filled out. The system uses the "key" column to determine whether the object in the related row is preexisting data.
If any fields are left blank in your UPDATE csv file, any data in those fields in Genius CE or Enterprise may be overwritten by the blanks.

"Username" AND "SectionIndex" columns
Username will be the username of the related user whose enrollments you are trying to update.
SectionIndex will be the section index in Genius CE or Enterprise corresponding to the related section for the enrollment.
Note: To avoid formatting issues, enter data directly into the CSV file whenever possible. Copying and pasting data from other applications can introduce special formatting or unsupported characters. For example, Microsoft Word may replace a standard apostrophe with a typographic ("curly") apostrophe. These character differences can result in unexpected or corrupted characters appearing in Genius after the file is uploaded.
CSV Import Guide
Administration > Operations > Import CSV is the best place to execute CSV imports in Genius+.
Select the type of CSV you want to import and click GET SAMPLE CSV. We suggest doing this first because if you have any custom fields you created, they will now be included in your CSV sample template for the selected object type.
Upload will push the changes into your system immediately.
A preview will give you a snapshot of what the data you are importing would look like.
As a best practice, save your CSV files as "CSV UTF-8" files. This will ensure that special letters and characters in your spreadsheets are maintained in the import.
**Reminders**
Sections = Course offerings made from a course template.
Course = Template of course.
Learners = Anyone who registers for a course.
Affiliations = Like departments or organizations, this is a way of creating a different experience on the site for different groups of users.
Enrollments = The association between a learner and the section they sign up for.
External Course = a record of a course taken outside of the current organization used for credit. This is usually designed for prerequisite and transcript purposes.
Below is a guide for each CSV import, along with the formatting requirements for the values that can be entered in each column. It is best practice for users to follow the CSV imports in the order presented below for initial imports. That way, if there are items Genius CE or Enterprise has to generate for you (like an ID), they will be available in the system once you are ready to populate those fields.

Only add an exit date if the learner is not active in the section. The exit date represents the date on which the course is completed.
**Only used for creating CSVs. Any updates will only impact the STATUS of the enrollment.
NEW UPDATES AS OF 08/2024:
As an admin, if you import an external course and add the equivalent course (using Course Index, Course Name, or Course Code), it will now count towards completion of a Learning Path or Prerequisite, similar to when a learner reports their external course for credit.
