Overview
When a learner completes a payment, Genius emails them a PDF confirming the purchase. This document is now a Registration Receipt — a post-payment confirmation that shows the courses purchased, the price of each item, and the total amount paid. It replaces the document previously labeled “Registration Invoice.”
The change matters because an invoice is a request for payment sent before payment, while a receipt confirms a payment that has already been made. The document is only generated and emailed after the payment is recorded and the transaction is marked COMPLETED, so “receipt” is the accurate term. Learners who need the document for reimbursement now get clear course detail and a total paid, without invoice framing.
This applies to the legacy Genius CE / Enterprise registration flow. The Plus Financials module keeps its own Invoice documents (with an Open → Paid lifecycle and a due date) and is unchanged — that terminology is correct there.
What Changed
The following legacy terminology and files were renamed from “Invoice” to “Receipt.” If you have support scripts, saved reports, or internal notes that reference the old names, update them accordingly.
| Area | Previous | Now |
| Document title | Registration Invoice #000001 | Registration Receipt #000001 |
| PDF file name | Invoice{number}.pdf | Receipt{number}.pdf |
| Email template | AUTO_REGISTRATION_INVOICE | AUTO_REGISTRATION_RECEIPT |
| Report file | Invoice.frx | REGISTRATION_RECEIPT.frx |
| System parameter | ENABLE_REGISTRATION_INVOICE | ENABLE_REGISTRATION_RECEIPT |
Beyond the rename, the receipt itself was rebuilt so it shows real course and section detail with per-line pricing and the total amount paid, and multi-item and B2B purchases render correctly. Existing tenant configurations were migrated to the new parameter name, so no action is needed to preserve current settings.
What the Learner Receives
After a payment completes, the learner is emailed the Registration Receipt automatically. The email uses the AUTO_REGISTRATION_RECEIPT template, and the attached PDF is titled Registration Receipt and named Receipt{number}.pdf. The receipt lists each course or section purchased, the price of each item, and the total amount paid.
Note: $0.00 purchases do not generate a receipt — the receipt is sent only when there is an amount paid.
Set Up & Manage the Registration Receipt
Edit the receipt layout
The receipt is rendered from a report file you can manage in the admin portal.
- Go to Administration › Custom Files.
- Open the Registration Receipt tab.
- Review or upload the REGISTRATION_RECEIPT.frx report file that controls the receipt’s layout.
- Save your changes. New receipts use the updated layout on the next completed payment.
Tip: Confirm the course/section detail and totals render as expected on a test transaction before relying on the layout in production.
Turn the receipt email on or off
Whether the receipt email is sent is controlled by the ENABLE_REGISTRATION_RECEIPT system parameter. When it is enabled, learners are emailed the Registration Receipt after a completed payment. If your tenant previously had the registration invoice email enabled, that setting was carried over automatically.
Key Concepts
Receipt: A confirmation sent after a payment completes. It shows what was purchased and the amount paid. This is what learners receive from the legacy registration flow.
Invoice: A request for payment sent before payment. In Genius, true invoices live in the Plus Financials module, which uses an Open → Paid lifecycle and a due date. Those are unchanged.
Transaction COMPLETED: The receipt is generated only after the payment credit is recorded and the transaction is marked COMPLETED.
FAQ
Why did the “Registration Invoice” become a “Registration Receipt”? The document is sent after payment, which makes it a receipt, not an invoice. The rename makes learner communication and support scripts accurate.
Do learners still get an invoice for the Plus Financials module? Yes. Financials Invoices are a separate feature with their own Open → Paid lifecycle and due dates, and they were not changed.
Will a learner get a receipt for a $0.00 registration? No. The receipt is sent only when an amount was actually paid.
Does the receipt show the specific courses purchased? Yes. The receipt lists each course or section, its individual price, and the total amount paid, including for multi-item and B2B purchases.
I have saved reports or scripts that reference “Invoice.” Do I need to update them? Update any references to the old names (document title, file name, email template, report file, or system parameter) so they match the new “Receipt” naming.
