Introduction
Typically, an organization with an e-learning initiative in place also has a Learning Management System (LMS) that helps serve the teaching and learning content consumed by its learners. The Learning Management System is the application that students use to access their courses, complete assignments, and submit work. Some examples of LMS include Blackboard Learn, Brightspace D2L, Instructure Canvas, Moodle, and others.
The LMS and Genius
The Learning Management System and Genius CE & Enterprise products have a special relationship. They will typically integrate closely to ensure that you get the most out of your instance of our solution. The integration between Genius CE and Enterprise and your LMS will be bidirectional. This means that Genius CE & Enterprise will send information to the LMS, and the LMS will also send information back to Genius CE & Enterprise as learners begin to engage with their coursework.
What Genius sends to the LMS
As an Administrator, you will make use of Genius CE & Enterprise products to create, edit, remove courses, sections, users, and enrollments. This information is typically fed back to the LMS, allowing you to manage your teaching and learning initiative from a central location.
In general, information sent from Genius CE & Enterprise to the LMS may include:
Typically, Genius CE and Enterprise products, as well as your LMS, will also have an SAML authentication integration. This allows learners to sign in to Genius CE or Enterprise and then use their Learner's Dashboard to access their coursework without needing to re-enter their login information. This process is known as Single Sign-On. In some organizations, either the LMS, Genius CE, or Enterprise will be integrated with your organization's Azure Active Directory or SAML server. Typically, only one of the two (the LMS or Genius CE/Enterprise) needs to be integrated with the authentication provider at your organization.
What the LMS sends back to Genius
Once your learners begin to make progress in their courses in the LMS, they will start to receive both grades and progress information that must be made visible to manage your teaching and learning initiative better.
To make this possible, the LMS will send the following information back to Genius CE or Enterprise:
The scope of the integration between the LMS at your organization and Genius will depend on both the LMS you are using in your teaching and learning initiative and your organization's preferences.
